Best Foods for Healthy, Youthful Body and Skin

As scientists gained more knowledge about the way human body works and functions, it is clear that foods can significantly affect how fast or slow your body and skin age.  Eating a well-balanced diet prolongs and improves the quality of your life.

Your skin is your first defense against external elements, therefore, your skin health is crucial to your wellbeing. As a skincare and wellbeing researcher, I take care of my skin and body internally by eating a wide variety of healthy foods. Here is my list of best foods for healthy, youthful skin and body.

1. Fruits

I love fruits. I have a big bowl of fresh fruit salad for breakfast everyday. I eat different variety of fruits depending on the season. Grapes, apple, pear, orange and avocado are my daily best friends, while I will add other fruits whenever they are available. Fruits contains vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that help boost your health and improve the condition of your skin.

2. Vegetables

I wish that I eat vegetables as much as I eat fruits. With vegetables, I have to remind myself that I need to eat them. I often buy bean sprouts, bell pepper, broccoli, spinach and kale from a local supermarket. Like fruits, vegetables help protect your body and skin against the environmental stress and damage. Rich in antioxidants, they help fight off free radicals, the major causes of premature ageing.

3. Beans, seeds and nuts

Beans, seeds and nuts are the good sources of protein and minerals. Our body needs protein to build and repair any damage. Protein is an important building block of bones, muscles, cartilage, skin and blood. I normally have a stock of green beans, peanuts, cashew nuts, sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds at home. I also enjoy eating tofu and tempeh as they are both nutritious and delicious.

4. Fatty Fish

I live on a vegan diet most of the times. It helps keep my energy level stable throughout the day. However, fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel, cod and tuna, are the best sources of omega 3 fatty acids. Both omega 3 and 6 fatty acids are essential for your physical and mental health.

Our body can't get enough EPA and DHA (types of omega 3 fatty acids) from vegan sources. Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids help slow down the ageing process and protect your body against diseases. As I hardly eat fish, I do take a fish oil supplement which contains DHA and EPA.

5. Water

I usually have two cups of warm water first thing in the morning. I also like to have a cup of tea with my breakfast. By the time I leave my house in the morning, I have drank about a litre of water. Throughout the day, I usually drink about another litre of water. When I arrive at home in the evening, I like to drink herbal tea while catching up with the news on TV or radio.

In general, men need about 2.5 litre of water per day, while women need about 2 litre. Drinking water frequently throughout the day helps keep your body and skin healthy.

If you don't drink enough water, your body will suffer from dehydration. It makes your skin look dull and lifeless. To help prevent dehydration, always carry a bottle of water with you, so you can drink it anytime.
